  • Aquascan Aquapulse AQ1B issues and options

First post after a long time wondering about PI kits and technology. I hope to spend a bit of time around here on all sorts of projects and issues but my immediate interest is an Aquascan AQ1B I have poured too much money into and is still causing issues.

After having the batteries repacked it worked fine for a while, then I cooked something after my charger strangely started pumping out 17v instead of 12. I just had a local electronic repair place check it out and $150 later it was back and once again working fine. About that time my other water detector, a Sand Shark broke down which is back in the US for repair so I bought some more coils for the AQ1B hoping to use that for the jobs I had coming up. However 30 seconds into the next water task the AQ1B once again started playing up. So I now have 5 expensive coils for a non-working detector and I need to work out what I am going to do. Options are:
    1. Buy a new AQ1B control unit (pricey, not sure I can find enough soon to make it worth while)
    2. Spend more on another repair
    3. Learn enough myself to repair it (hoping to do this anyway)
    4. Research on which PI kit is a suitable replacement so I can drop a say Surf PI/ Baracuda or similar in the AQ1B housing and use with current coils
    5. buy another underwater detector and cut my losses
    6. see if there is a AQ1B donor machine out there cheap
    7. see if a replacement board is available
    8. learn enough to trace the fairly simple looking AQ1B board and make one
    9. something else

I like the machine as it works really well at depth, is non motion so I can size objects with it, uses slow pulse delay monos so I can say make up a 1m x 1m square coil for it easily but I am not overly keen in investing too much more in it atm.

So my question for you learned folk is this, Which of the readily available kits is will fit in a AQ1B housing, can use mono coils designed for slow pulse delay PIs, and is non-motion? I also don't have a oscilloscope atm but I guess can buy one if I can account for the purchase with time it will save and knowing I will use it in the future.

On a related note, I have a non working AQ1B coil here I am prepared to cut open if anyone wants to see what is inside and the AQ1B case is open if anyone wants to see the board. Thanks

If the PC Board has never taken a swim I would try to repair it. PI's of this type aren't that complicated.

      Yes and Yes, thanks.

Thanks Eric, for some reason the PM reply text box won't accept spaces as i type but I will get back to you ASAP, ta.

If I try to quote a post I can't type spaces. This reply is for 6666. Here is a cross cut from an 8" AQ1B coil. It was only working intermittently so I initially tried to get in to see if I could fix, but all sealed up and I couldn't do anything so here is a look. I have a new one so can take resistance and inductance off that if you want.

Here are couple of pics of the board 6666, let me know if you want better ones. The jumper wires on the back are from the recent expensive but not overly productive repair. There is also a black wire on the front that has come loose from the molex plug but I can handle that one. Cheers

Thanks Parsec they are interesting pictures, I think somebody told me Eric made those by hand,
I count 25 wires in the coil is that right , what dia is it thanks.

if you are having trouble getting a PM from Eric try clearing out your inbox, if I have more than about 185 messages, I stop getting PM's , damn pain.

Thanks for the pictures. What's the minim delay it can reach with this coil? because from what i know potting the coil with epoxy will increase the capacitance of the coil. and where is the shield?

I am new and there is only one msg in my inbox. The issue I am having is if I write after a tag (img or quote) the text input script isn't recognising spaces so itlookslikethis. Doesn't happen when I type above the tags. I can live with it. That is an 8" coil but I will take an actual measurement tomorrow and count the wraps. cheers

you can adjust it from 40uS to 100uS. It doesn't need shielding in that range. It is very stable in deep sea water so I use mine for SCUBA jobs. It is useless on small targets (doesn't register an Australian 5c piece) but is very clear on normal rings and above.

parsec - If you need someone to affect a repair on your detector, it would be useful to know your location.

I actually have an Aquapulse AQ1B, and the PCB looks exactly the same, except for two things. On my board, all the ICs are in sockets; and your board has two extra back-to-back diodes fitted at the bottom right.

Eric is the original designer of the AQ1B.

I am in Adelaide, South Australia. Hopefully I can work my way through the issues myself as I gain electronic and trouble shooting skills. I am honoured that Eric responded and have sent a message. cheers

Parsec, WELCOME! i am attentionally follow this matter Aquapulse. i am ONE here who interested to get all info and to give
the PCB for DIY people in Egypt (LOL).
so thank you for pics. if possible can you measure every resistor value? you may not desolder them up and measure as-is.
only in both direction - choice value that is more high, from both. it will be real value.

there is Nelson who promised to give me full info much years. BUT GIVES NOTHING!

It will be nice for me to have full of my time to work on metal detectors, but unfortunally i have to work, be incharge of my family and also taking care of my wife health that now is much better. So far i will try to get new pictures from aquapulse and then i will send it to you.

About Whites TDI, do you have the schematics for it?

Thanks for taking the time to write me and i will be back has soon has i can take the pictures.

                            Best regards
