  • What is the best Metal Detector design?

This is the kind of question that should make the veterans think: O God, not again !!! ... but for those who are new it makes a lot of difference knowing where to start.

As the answers can be very broad, I think it is good to consider, in order, the following criteria:

_ 1st Circuit "as simple as possible", without microcontrollers, that any hobbyist can build at home.

_ 2st Stable circuit: that does not present false signals and suffers the least influence of external factors.

_ 3st "As large as possible" the detection depth of small objects such as coins and rings (for hunting in the beach, freshwater, etc).

This is an excellent forum with many and very important information, but as almost everything on the internet suffers the great evil of having everything fragmented ...

If anyone can at least say, "The circuit "X" is what meets these criteria," that's fine.

    Thanks.

It's good to start with PI circuit, for example GEOTECH BARRACUDA(not BARRACUDA LEGEND) and MINIPULSE PLUS.They are simple and have full step by step build documentation.GOOD LUCK!

__ 4st accessable board or kit for good price, with the thread i could sit down there with caffee cup and George-on-line or Eric-on-line always could answer me on any my question, in any time of twenty-four hours, at midnight too.

GEOTECH BARRACUDA is in process ... (just waiting for PCB to arrive from CHINA ......).

        MINIPULSE PLUS I will check.

        Thanks.

"4st accessable board or kit for good price"
I think this is an important item I could have mentioned ... but I did not think of it before ......
          Thanks.

              IT DOES NOT EXIST.
In any detector and any project there will downfalls that do not seem so prominent in other designs. It is about the grass on the other side of the river.

I don't see why you have to specifically exclude micro-based machines. If you were able to obtain a pre-programmed device, it would not be a problem. And 'micro-based' doesn't have to mean LCD displays, push-button menu's etc. XP's GoldMaxx Power has a micro doing some of the ID/discrimination work, but externally it's like an analogue machine.

In the VLF I have built both the IDX and Bandido. IDX is better than the Tesoro on quite fields. Tesoro is better most of the time. However I am using a second hand 1265x at the moment and it walks all over both of them most of the time. For some reason it does not do very well on waterlogged ground. Unfortunately there is no PCB made for it.

IDX Has impressive air test unfortunately this doesn't translate into real world depth. Although I have had good success using one. By running with very little discrimination then thumbing the discrimination up. You can make a calculated decision as to whether to dig. But is quit a steep learning curve to get the most out of it.

For general coin size targets the PIs seem to preform the same.

I'm looking for a project that could manufacture in an art form here in Brazil.
Here is a great place for metal detector.
Many places still virgin, many people have no idea what a metal detector is.
Many coins and rings to be found. "Very much much"......
I made a PI from Poland. With it I got enough gold, silver and coins to buy a detector (Delta 4K; TEKNETICS).
But the reality here is very different from other countries.
Everything here is very expensive (very expensive indeed !!!) and a "reasonable" metal detector is a luxury for most people.
Hence I thought of some project that had a minimum to be considered good, but that must have to be cheap.
I think the best would be PI-RAT from Russia, but I can not get good depth with it ...
                    So, still in the search.
                    Thanks all.
