  • Towed PI

Fisher do a boat towed PI Metal Detector. What is the benefit of this? How about range to possible targets surely it cannot detect diferent metals on the seabed? What is better a magnetometer or a PI Metal Detector?

    Thanks

If you are looking for a 150ft steel hull ship or if you are looking for an iron anchor, then a Magnetometer would be better. If you are looking for some brass cannon or silver bars, then a boat tow metal detector would be better. It depends on the situation as to which is the better choice.

      Re: Towed PI

Many salvage companies use both. A magnetometer has more range and can cover a large area much faster than a boat towed metal detector, so it is often used to find the general area of a wreck. As FJ says, it only responds to ferrous metal, so you are looking for anchors, iron cannon etc. I believe also, that you can sometimes locate a ballast stone pile, if the stone contains iron minerals.

Having found the general area of a wreck by this means, you can then switch to a boat towed metal detector to pinpoint metal objects, both ferrous and non ferrous. Finally, a diver held metal detector can be used to home in on the targets and also find small individual items.
