Has anyone built the ETI 549 Induction Balance Metal Detector from Electronics Today Internationl,Feb 1977. Is it a good unit and can I make any improvemnets to it or the coil windings for deeper penetration? Your suggestions!

I am also interested in building one of these ETI 549 projects.
I bought the book "Simple Projects from ETI Volume 2" and while similar, the 549 described there is different to the one you have uploaded on your website.
Does anyone know the reason for these two different circuits and which one is newer or better?
I can scan and upload my one if nobody here has seen it before.

I built one in 77 and had a lot of fun and finds.
I made it slightly discriminating by slightly off setting the coils away from the null, only a tiny amount, but when done exactly as I did it and searching with it crackling, a ferrous object reduced the crackling at first and a non ferror immediately increased the crackling further. It was a great machine for the time and cost almost nothing to make, though the FET(?) may be difficult to source nowadays. If true, build the Australian version, also I am told that the australian one works even better.
I have attached it here.
