  • Does XP Deus have a multi-tapped coil?

I have always wondered about this. I can hear a relay click in the coil when I switch frequencies.

Originally I assumed it used a single coil tuned to the mid band somewhere. Both the 9" and 11" seem to favor the 12 kHz channel fwiw, at least for the 8 targets I tested in Basic-1. (Various high conductor coins, rings, necklaces, large musket balls)

Even though the coil favors 12kHz, I can't really draw any conclusions from that alone.

Were they clever enough to tap the coil at different points through the winding? If so, how detrimental would the "unused" copper be to the active part of the coil?

Just a single coil, switched in capacitors to lower the frequency, a couple of Axicom magnetic-latching relays. We never did get into any more serious reverse-engineering on Henrik's thread, so it's not possible to say what caps (and maybe additional resistors) may be switched in.

I did suggest it may be a multi-winding TX coil at the start of that thread, as it seemed a viable way to do it, so I was surprised when it turned out to be simpler.

Interesting, approach. I'll still read the rest of the thread out of curiosity.

I don't have a real demand for a custom coil at the moment, though if I see a used coil for cheap enough one day I may play around with one.

A while back I saw a video of a little 6" DD deus coil on youtube, maybe that was Henrikras?

It could be Henrik's one, but there's also another enthusiast who has built one....the battery/electronics box was different. Here it is, on md-hunter's site:

And some internal pics from a different source:

            Hey that is cool.

Nice to know it is somewhat doable, albeit with a donor coil.

Right now I'm swinging the 11" Lite and have access to a 9" coil if the need arises although what I'm really thinking about is maybe using it for water detecting. I usually use a Excalibur or a Lobo in the water, though the Deus would be the ultimate combination of the two. I'm not big on using my "land" machine with a $600 coil in the water, but I do like what the Russian guy in the video did by having the electronics separate from the coil. It would be easier to keep the important bits dry long term, since I would have to run a antenna wire to the Deus coil, the added wire on the DIY coil is a moot point.

i use 9inch coil underwater, but only for fresh water hunts. In salt water the signal is strange, bronken. Now depend of the settings. Antena cable i made from rg 174/u, nice thin coax. I had to use aquasure glue to apply on the bottom of the coil, because i had some repair doing on my coil. Water or condensation went inside and board started to become coroded.

I just detect in freshwater. Fortunately the single frequency machines work pretty good here.

What were the symptoms of your coil getting wet? I use a garden hose to clean my detector which should be OK, just wondering what to look out for.

in fresh water i think all detectors perform well. I bought not working xp coil from ebay and after i oppened it i found corosion on the board. I was lucky that after cleaning with alcohool it started to work again. I noticed poor plastic under the coil, where you need to cut it for battery replacement. Also the top plastic that is glued to the coil( the one with pin charger) can be glued bad.

The Excalibur is deep (Cannon ball deep) and finds lots of rings, but it takes more work or patience in the trash. The Lobo isn't as deep (which is nice at times lol) but it is good on chains, fine jewelry and is fast in the trash. Lobo's all metal mode is decent for searching, similar to Excalibur all-metal. The problem with the Lobo discrimination is that single tone in the trash. The Deus "Pitch" mode sounds just like the Lobo in All Metal but with the addition of iron farts which would be useful rather then broken tones in Lobo DISC mode due to co-located iron. Even the more traditional approach of using a Deus fast mode with fulltones would be great in the water. Deus full-tones sounds like an Excalibur,(More of a zip-zing-zroom sound rather then a beep.) but with an expanded tonal range AND the ability to hear iron in the DISC mode. With the Excalibur DISC turned all they way down you still can't hear iron. I would prefer a fart to a complete null I think.

OK all the more reason not to us the Deus coil submerged. I will be gentle with my cleaning. I admit it is nice to be able to use a garden hose to clean this machine rather then the traditional route of taking everything apart and trying to clean things with a damp rag while keeping the electronics dry.

I will keep an eye out for a cheap or broken coil. I might even just buy a used functional one and modify that.
