I'm not a Deus user, so I'm not overly familiar with it's operation, but...
When you power-on the machine, you have to do so with the coil clear of anything metal, and clear of the ground. So presumably when you do lower the coil to the ground, it can take a measure of ground signal strength, which then allows it to modify it's response to the ground. Presumably 'strong' ground behaves differently to mild ground. I've not tried to measure such differences (yet) but I guess that the ground-signal fluctuation is not directly proportional to raw ground signal strength. For example: If mild ground gave a static (demodulated) reading of 20 mVolt, and fluctuated by 1 mV when sweeping, then stronger ground that had a static reading of 200 mV (ten times greater) might actually only fluctuate by 3 mV (only 3 times greater). So it's possible that some user control, combined with automatic compensation, may help filter out the ground signal better.
On Dankowski's forum, there are often reports from guys who hunt in strong iron-heavy ground "Tennessee red dirt", which seem to be over 100-times stronger than the mild European soils I hunt in, yet they still seem to be able to recover targets from modest depths. This suggests that targets don't have to be 100-times stronger (ie. really shallow) to be detectable.

i was a little disappointed few weeks ago when i tested one gold ring(aprox 5gram), in sand at 30cm, fresh water lake beach, gb aprox 82, tx3, sens 99, 18khz, disc0, 5tone iron tone disc, reactivity0 silencer -1, version3.2, 9inch coil. i tried different freq, but no signal. BUT! when i found the gold rings, in the water, i had to go deep, i estimate 30-40cm, as my scoop was full in the hole. This might be hallo effect of gold. I don't know what to say about the update... people are pro and against... but i think hf coil will be good for gold.
