I am no sure if I posted this in the right spot. I finished the Surf PI project, I used my basket weave coil for the first run test. I took the project out in the yard, found target from 5 to 7 inches deep. The first I noticed is the deeper the target the weaker the target tone. I did learn quite a bit information about PI detectors with this project. Thanks for all the info from the board. Jim

Yes I agree with waltr- for anyone interested it is quite intriguing to be able to see the "workings".
Although I have posted this pic many times elsewhere. it may be of interest to you. Armrest and brackets are made from pvc sewer pipe, bent with a heat gun. Lower shaft(900mm) and handle are laminated bamboo rake handle-very strong. Upper shaft is 700mmx25mm aluminium from the hardware shop-about $AUD10/mtr. For the box brackets I use an offcut of ally as a former, with an offcut of sewer pipe on one side, so that when it is bent into a hat-shape it is slightly smaller in circumference. This allows it to be screwed up tight around shaft. Leave it longer than needed, then cut off excess and drill holes once shaped. Use welding gloves so you can hold it in shape until it cools. Rather than trying to pull it up tight and risk splitting the box, I make corresponding flat brackets inside the box. Similar method for the slide clamp, but with ally sticking out of a vice. Then glue a piece of rubber in the half that clamps the slightly smaller lower shaft. Folding handle is shaped to shaft with a half round rasp. rounding the front edge to allow it to fold forward. The bracket for this needs to be squashed tightly around shaft with handle in place. This may take some fine tuning to get correct pressure on shaft when nut is tightened. Armrest is bent around lower shaft offcut by heating only in the middle. !00mm sewer pipe. Shape it so the arm cup is tight. When stretched (cold) onto the ally it will widen. A screw is used as a set adjustment allowing armrest to be twisted for transport/storage, but still tight enough not to move in use. Sharp edges are rounded (carefully) with a mill file.
The 12v 1w solar panel hooks up to a 4A Li-ion charge controller stuck to the side of the 3x18650 battery holder. It can also be charged from any un-regulated 12v supply.

The question was how small was the little PI detector,it is 10 CM long,5 CM wide and 4CM high. You folks are very talented at building detectors. My hat goes off to you all, I am not as well versed at the construction. I really do enjoy the pictures and thank you for sending the pic's. Best to all Jim

Wayhu, I looked for 22mm ally here but they had to order it in, so didn't worry. I was going to change my design to a 3 piece to make it even more compact. The lower conduit would then be shorter ( bamboo composite rake handle then too thick) lessening the risk of breakage, but as the 22mm ally would be closer to the coil, there may be interference using larger coils.

Tim the small detector is from Moreland and Overton book. I made a pc board, it works but it doesn't set the world on fire. I found a couple of mistakes on the pc board layout. The jumpers installed corrected the problem. I have been having fun with the Hammerhead board which I purchase from WM6. I guess I am from the old school that say's my brain can be a better judge of a target than a pic chip. I have a VLF machine with a 8 bit processor in it, I just don't trust the machine.
