  • Please Help with Older White's

    Hello Folks,
I was hoping someone here could tell me what is going on. I have a White's Coinmaster 4000/D series 3. It is new to me and my only detector. I have read the manual several times. I have a feeling that it is not working properly. I can adjust threshold, ground balance and all the other controls. The problem is that no matter where the controls are set when the detector picks up a signal the tone is constant and it pegs the sensitivity needle past 100. I have tried it with an 8" and 11" loop with the same results. What could be the problem? Any suggestions?

    Regards,

That was a nice model with the meter on the end of the handle, correct?

Do you feel that the trigger switch is working?

Are you getting an audio report when you detect a target, or do you just have a constant tone from the detector all the time?

The meter circuit usually has a limiting current resistor in it. You may want to unsolder one end of that resistor and accurately measure it's value.

      Ken,
Yes this is the one with the meter on the handle. The trigger IS working correctly. I'm not sure I know what you mean by "audio report". If I understand correctly, yes I am getting a report. Here is what happens no matter if I'm in DISC, SAT, or GEB. I will be sweeping then I get a tone. when I am centered over the target the needle slams to 100 at the same time the tone gets louder but the pitch stays the same. I hope that helps explain a little better. If I do what you said about the resister I wouldn't know what I'm looking for but my dad will. I may ask him to check it out.

      Thanks,

It sounds like your detector is working normally, but you are just concerned that the meter pegs itself on target. It would bother me too.

The meter is most likely driven by a transistor or op amp, and there should be the limiting resistor to limit the needle travel. There may even be a variable resistor in this circuit to do the same thing (in which case it would be adjustable on the circuit board).

ANY IDEA WHERE I COULD GET ONE? HOW LONG (HOW MANY PAGES ) IS THE MANUAL?
