I am trying to bring back to life this old fisher VLF 553D Metal Detector. The switch at the end of the handle is snapped off, is this actually a toggle switch or a push button switch on these detectors, also is it possible to remove the rubber grip because it looks like it maybe glued on. The detector is showing no signs of life apart from the needle on the meter pegging hard left.

I could not find a User Manual for the 533, but the 552 version states that it's a push button on the end of the handle.Attached Files

Thanks for the help guys , i will be reporting back here in about a week once the switch and new battery packs arrive. I am sure there is a fault or faults on the PCB though. I probably will need some advice on key test points to locate why she is not alive.

my folder '533' has only the schematic and more nothing, it is empty.
i do not mean all people, but majority is same.
i do not know... maybe capitalizm is so angry egoistic society that it destroy all the best features into the people.

I will post a photograph of the detectors internals once i have fitted the toggle switch and wired the 2 new Battery Connectors in. A transistor to replace too. The phantom dabbler has tried to fix the detector before i got this detector i get the feeling. I just hope the coil proves to be good.

They are good photos everyone. I started selling Fisher as a dealership back in 1984. At the time they were beginning to close out the 400 series line and the 500 series lines as well. The represtentative let me know about the huge discounts on the series models, and I jumped in as I knew opportunity was there. I loved all of the models, but I especially liked the 555-D model. On the threshold they had a stacked pot, which the lower knurl tuned in the coarse adjustment, then the taller smaller knurl, turned in the fine tuning adjustment. Now they were not the X-Series machines, but I not only sold the hell out of them, the representative phoned me one day and told me "you have cleaned us out of stock, they are all gone now"!
Now I sold a lot, as I always told the truth. You do not have to defend the truth, but you will always have to defend a lie. I like telling the truth as people appreciate the truth and are not mad at me. I am only telling what I believe in, not accusing anyone . I love giving people good stuff. I sleep sound like a baby at night that way!
