  • Bic pen test

Try a standard Bic plastic ball point pen medium tip - small brass tip with 1mm tungsten carbide ball. Steve Herschbach has used it for years as a standard for testing gold detectors - also easy to stick in the sand and hard to lose. - and, of course available everywhere.

Google Steve Herschbach bic pen and read what he has to say about it. It apparently behaves a very low conductive target. It presents in interesting test of the cut-off setting of a detector with iron discrimination - Might ve interesting for Manta

Here’s the results one guy got with his nugget detector on various targets (the POINT - lol - is to show how tough a target the pen tip is....)

”Bic Pen-3/4" 1/2 Grain (not gram) nugget 1" 1.3 gram nugget 5" . One tenth oz gold coin 8 1/2".. from Finds Technology Forum

Don't have a pen with Bic on it but some similar to a Bic pen. I'll try to find a Bic, don't know if all Bic pens would be the same. Pen A was the first I tried, about the same as a 4 grain nugget I have. Looked like an easy target until I tried pen C.

Tried pen C again, .65us TC. Don't know if it would detect less than a 1/2grain nugget?

Searched Bic pens, found BiC Round Stic medium has a 1mm tungsten ball. Did a test with one. Don't know if it's the same as the one Steve used, lot easier to detect than pen C. Not much harder to detect than a 4grain nugget, should be a lot easier than a 1/2grain nugget.

Purchased the BiC Round Stic medium at Dollar General 10 for a dollar. Probably is a good test target. Interested in what anyone gets for detection distance if they try the BiC Round Stic medium with their detector.
