  • Capacitor discharge PI

Has anyone explored the possibilities of Capacitor Discharge type coil energizing mechanisms for PI detectors, it would seem to be a logical step for greater depth detectors or am i missing something (to much ringing or to long pulses etc)?

this way was been used in HV flyback transformer testers. i did one, simple and working good. here is not nothing new but i do not remember this way using in metal detectors.

sorry that i give all information in russian, just i am out of amateur subject english zone.

Or do you mean a discharge circuit as with an ignition?

Similar yes, it is also used to make short pulses for stungun circuits and anything else needing to dump a fast capacitor (mylar poly) into a coil like laser ignitors and camera flash, but i see where kt was going with that too..

Hm, there should be a try.

Just requires a bit more circuit technology

LOL, A portable EMP Weapon. If the Police show up you can turn it up a notch and smoke their radios ?

i was just thinking to up the power density by a couple of killerwatts per pulse (very short pulses as we need) but with a suitable ppsu who knows........seriously pmsl

??? Give it a shot. Putting a Mega Watt into the ground is not going to make it any more sensitive on the Rx end. I think the Target is only going to Ring Out with as much energy as it could absorb and produce as Eddy currents. As it is PI detectors produce a hell of a lot of Energy compared to a VLF. If you reworked the Rx end more in line with a GPR ( Tx Rx situation) some thing may be realized of value. Pumping too much energy in the Ground is going to light up the non targets a lot more so as to blind you from seeing the Tree's in the Forest ? GPR has the same issues, eaa!

In the PI system the issue has never been getting the energy to the target. The issue has always been picking out the target from the return.

                            Try this patent:

                            http://www.freepatentsonline.com/9366778.html

Similar methods were discussed here several years ago, I don't recall the thread names.
