  • modded Compadre as good as a Cibola or Vaquero

I am looking at picking up a used Compadre and adding the external pots that I have seen modders doing. Is a modded Compadre as good as a stock Cibola and Vaquero?

Also, how well is the GB mod on a Cibola. Looking at a used Cibola as well.

You only want to do the mods if you can't afford a Tesoro that already has external GB. Or only do them if you find a Tesoro dirt cheap and want to customize it.
You don't always see any improvement in depth or performance unless your soil conditions vary from place to place, when a fixed GB is too negative or too positive.
Most Tesoros have the same average depth of detection, may vary from 1-2" depending upon the model and coil size. The Compadre is an excellent detector without modifying it. Instead of the Compadre you maybe better off find a used Mojave, they average $150-175US. The Tejon and Vaquaro are probably Tesoros deepest detectors if you looking for depth and all the external controls.

I hear a lot of people have a Compadre as well as a Vaquero for some reason. My friend has a AT Pro and also a Compadre.

I can get a dirt cheap Cibola so why not mod it with a GB since I won't have warranty as a second owner.

Is the Mojave that much better than the Compadre? Or is the Compadre just fine.

I never thought too much about the Compadre, basic turn on and go detector. Has 180ED discrimination so it will find smaller gold with conductivity closer to iron when using no discrimination. The Cibola will not find that small gold as it has ED165 discrimination. Now the Cibola does have a true threshold based all metal mode, you can tap into. The Compadre is just a discriminator detector, no all metal mode. So in the case of the Compadre vs. Cibola, Cibola would be the better choice with the addition of external GB and Disc/All metal mode toggle switch. The Compadre vs. Mojave, I had the Mojave and would say its deeper and has the ability to switch between two fixed ground balance values. Really its just a new better version of the Compadre with a 7" coil for a little more money. The Mojave was Tesoros answer to those looking for a new model Tesoro, color change, GB switch and newer 7" coil. By the way the Cibola with GB mode will come close to the Vaquaro, biggest difference is the Cibola will see to operate smoother, not as ratty. Used pricing on the Cibola has come down a lot over the years. You just don't know how old the unit is your buying, came out in 2004. Tesoro changed to a black color scheme about 1 1/2 years ago, electronics stayed the same.
