  • $1 billion project! Everyone invited to join!

I've been following this forum since 2006.
What i saw here so far...
    - huge number of conversant people
    - huge number of highly educated people
    - huge number of good willing enthusiasts
    - huge number of skilled professionals
in shorter; lot of brains on a pile!
    So...
At least can we gather and join all our forces on one thing; to project and design really functional and effective mosquito repellent device?
    Is it so hard?
I've been trying ALL what's already available on market, in books, in collections, on the net. Literally All what's published so far.
NONE did the job! Literally NONE!
Lot of nice theories, nice explanations, nice circuits and ideas. Efficiency... NONE!
So i place a honest appeal here; let us gather and join forces and try do project EFFECTIVE method, circuit, device, apparatus... whatever, against those pesky pests!
If we here can't do that; nobody can! Considering all what's already have been done here during the years.
    What's your opinion?
    Can we do it?

Spraying insecticide over the larger area is old method of fight against those pests.
But i am afraid that by doing this; we do more harm to nature than all the benefits we can eventually have from poisoning the pests.
Insecticide is chemistry. Sometimes long term persistent and present in soil. A poison.
By doing this; we don't look further enough in future.
And the pests do comes back again next season. More resistant and more angry than before!
Soil stays poisoned with chemistry for long time. Pests are back again... nothing solved for good.
Electronic "shock lamp" is good choice for small local area. Simply attracts the pest and blows it in small pieces.
      Fast, clean and effective.
But you can not carry such lamp with you in forest. And it protects you from only one side.
All the soaps, cremes, "recipes"... naaaa, not efficient at all.
What we need is small electronic device that will cover larger area and perform as "barrier" against those pests.
Ideally to produce certain kind of "waves" that will "roast" the beasts on a spot. To destroy their nerve system and tiny brains in a second.
So they simply to start dropping around totally dead.
This logically leads to some strong and precise wave generator.
      Maybe i wish too much...

it was one from my first projects. father bought parts, then it was very hard to find some parts especcialy those two transformers.
          circuit worked good.

My Understanding is Only "Female" Mosquitos Bite, But Female Mosquitos are Deaf.

That's the part of the mainstream theory that appears to be true.
I never saw the male bites me, only females.
Easy to tell due significant difference in sizes of those pests.
Males are several times larger than females.
              Females
after mating does not bite because they react on ultrasound which mimics the male on the "heat".
So she wants to avoid another male and that's why she runs away from the "sound of male on the heat".
That's why those small ultrasound generators are partially effective.
Such devices will repel only "pregnant" females.
But there is huge chance to attract females who have not mated yet.
              Big problem!
That's why those small repellent devices are not so effective.
Thanks for posting that old article KT315, it is interesting to have it as "vintage" for collection.
It is the basic principle of the generator and audio output, producing strong ultrasound.
By the very same principle there is much modern design published in EPE magazine, based on Microchip uPc.
It has two powerful mosfets, transformer and piezoacoustic horns in array.
Transformer is easy to diy. Just few of turns on ferrite core.
I made it several years ago, initially to try to shut up the barking dogs.
Not effective at all on dogs, cats, mice and mosquitoes. I have tried.
Each of the animal is hearing different range in ultrasound spectrum,
Situation is even more complicated with the fact that there is huge difference in hearing between young and old dogs (how about mosquitoes too).
So... its been said that old dogs can not hear above 22kHz, while young dogs can hear up to 40kHz.
So the same device will affect only young dogs! ha!
This theory leaks all over the place, obviously.
That's why i said "no efficiency at all". Because i saw no such device that will repel the pests in all possible cases and combinations.
              Real problem.
Not far from what i wrote in a title; $1 billion project!
Just imagine if there is device like that, totally effective in all possible cases. Whole world will pay for it.

Once I've made a similar circuit with NE555 but my dogs didn't like it so I couldn't use it at home .
Im very interested in a better one, I like to go fishing also and it's very annoying to get bitten by mosquitoes every second!

Andi thats effective only at house, at home, if you literally surround your home, all the windows and doors with such plants.
                  That's alright!
But i am crying here for portable device, to carry with me on my "expeditions" with detector, usually deep in large forests and mountains... the kingdom of those pests!

Question is for how long the effect will last? It will easy and fast evaporate in usual conditions.
Also you have to rub whole your body, face and dress with it. Detailed and careful job.
I heard in the past that beer helps. This is serious and true story. I put few of those inside myself (lol) and one to smear all over myself.
The effect lasted only dozen minutes, if there was any effect at all. Naaaa.
Maybe still ... very strong ultrasound output and array of strong transductors. Two or more sweep generators sweeping along whole frequency range.
Mosfets at the output and special impedance matching transformer.
Something like pain field generator. To produce ultra powerful disturbing ultrasound "field" around, covering few square meters.
In that case i will have problem only to obtain strong US transductors. Haven't seen them at local suppliers.

Here are two schemes that I found online some time ago. I have not tried it and I do not know if it is efficient.

I used to go fly fishing in the high mountain lakes in Oregon and as the snow melts the mosquitoes hatch. I must be very tasty as I would get overwhelmed with bites. I started using deet and it worked pretty well. The scary part was the warning that deet dissolves plastic. I have read that mosquitoes zero in on a combination of heat, moisture and CO2.

Strange thing is that those always attack the same spots on skin, at least this is the rule in my case.
Same areas. Probably where blood vessels are most exposed or where the skin is thinnest.
I am generally against chemistry. Because it carry a risk, health risk.
What i would like to see and be very happy; is to have the "device" and when turn it On; those pests to drops dead around me.
That's why i so like those "shock lamps". You sit and enjoy the most pleasant sound of roasting and exploding mosquitoes.

The skin is the second lung of the human.
That's why I avoid chemical agents
And I think nature has remedies for insects.
Clear that the chemical industry has something against it
