Is there any good use for a grid dip meter as it relates to measuring resonance of search coils with embedded caps?
Has anyone had experience of trying this approach?

Not highly precise but informative enough (in case of PI coils). And rapid measurement too.
Inductive coupling between GDM coil and PI coil need to be as weak as possible to remain still stable measurement.
Coil cable wire end should be bridged by small loop wire together.
You can measure coil resonance over those small loop wire.
Of course GDM need to be good calibrated too.
