  • Troy Shadow X5 MGB?

Does anyone know what on the board controls the Manual Ground Balance?
I can spin the knob and it doesn't change it at all.
I know it is on the board because I have tried my front cover from my other known working x5 and it still doesn't work.

Look for physical connection between GEB and pcb and do trace to see which one of those trimmers is.
I remember that i tried the same, long time ago, i don't remember the outcome.
Mr. Troy Galloway warned me not to mess around the trimmers because i can make things worse. (which i did)

Yup from what I gather you need some type of equipment to set those trimmers and they can be different on each machine.
I will try to do what you suggested but this is a pretty small board might need to break out the usb microscope.

Instead of "googling" through the USB microscope; you can use ohmmeter with a beeper.
Almost every multimeter is having that option.

Never mind the "revision". Small differences or none between those.
Troy X5 and X3 are sharing the same pcb design.
X5 is actually an X3 with additional commands put on front panel.
Detach (de-solder) GEB pot from wires and use ohmeter with beeper to trace each of the wires and see where they go on pcb.

                  Thought I would mention this.
I took my known working X5 and with the DISC knob I knocked nickel out at around 5 or 6. On the other X5 with ground issues I DISC out nickel at around 8. Also on the X5 with ground issues when I use the nickel check switch it still can see the nickel but will knock out some pull tabs and rings but not the nickel and under like it should do?
I am wondering if someone played with a TRIM somewhere because would a detector actually need to be re calibrated this much after time?

somebody before you touched the trims in big hope 'to add the sensitivity'. thats main problem of those guys - they are like blinded squerells
absolutely do not understand electronics and shin up inside twisting all they see on PCB.

yes kt, it should be easier to read those chip idents in that photo, the dip package at the top of the board is probably unavailable in smt or they would have used them, that will narrow down candidates just noticed u10 is that chip burr brown makes sense.
they didn't do a very good job of removing those idents did they.
iv'e found a tiny bit of white thermal grease rubbed on and wiped back off brings them up a bit, as does uv light.
