  • Solid Carbon Fibre Rod: Can I use it to make the lower stem to attach the coil?

Hiya all,,,I was wondering whether it's possible to make a Lower stem (to attach the detector coil to) out of solid Carbon Fibre Rod? Would it interfere with field of the Coil in any way? It's the type that's used to making Fishing rods. I had an idea to use it (if I can) on a new Detector shaft I was making but wanted to know what other peoples thoughts on this was and whether it's suitable material or not. I appreciate any advise on this,,Thanks,,,Marty.

Wave your detector over the rod and see if its detected.

I think fishing rods are made of carbon fibre tube rather than solid rod - a lot lighter.

        Marty,
no idea why you would want to use a solid rod ? In theory a tube is stronger than a solid rod.
That is, from my experience anyway, as long as you avoid the very cheap fishing rods ( not sure if they are all chinese... ). I cracked a few of these.
Do a robustness test first. I used to fill one end with a short wooden dowel that allowed me to drill a hole for a nylon screw to attach the coil ears to.
        Here are some more ideas:

Thanks all for the replies,,,,Hi Bernard,,Hope you're well,,,The original Idea was to use Carbon fibre tubing, not 'Rod' as I wrote, I realised after I'd written my query, sorry. The material I had in mind seemed pretty expensive when I first looked it up and saw the prices!,,I thought I'd ask others first before buying any. I have 2 x 'Crivit' hiking sticks made of really strong, thin, very light weight Aluminium. The handles on them are a really nice shape and very comfortable. The writing on the Crivit hiking sticks says ''Ultra Light 135'' aluminium construction. The Cam lock levers are excellent on it. I cut and season a lot of my own Hard-woods for building Archery bows, bandsaw boxes, lathework etc, and I'm making some fixtures from Cherry and Yew wood that will attach my detector enclosure, cuff and battery pack to the hiking stick shaft,,,I already made some fixtures from some pine soft wood to see how it would all go together and it looks and functions very well,,,and it's reasonably light compared to the weight of my T2 shaft,,they're nearly the same weight, but the hiking stick one folds up a lot smaller etc,,The Inner dimension of the 2nd extension of the hiking stick is 12mm so I ordered some OD12mm x ID10mm x 1m hollow carbon fibre rod to attach my coil to. I've made a soft wood connector to attach to it as a dry run and will fill the end of the tube with an inch and a half of Cherry to strengthen it to receive the Nylon bolt,,,,if everything pans out I'll rebuild the parts in Cherry and Yew wood. If it all works out ok I'll post some pics. Thanks again for the replies,,,Regards,,Marty
