  • Best book question and introduction.

    Hi folks,

As a new(ish) member of this forum I should like to say "hello" and ask my very first question.

Much of my working and hobby life has revolved around electronics and radio and as retirement looms in a few years I am tempted to get into detectoring. I have to be honest and admit I have liitle interest in finding gold but the thoughts of "tinkering" with homebrew detector designs and being out in the fresh air digging up small plots of farm land hold some appeal :-)

    My question.
I understand that since none of you know me or my level (or lack of) technical expertse then the following question might be hard to answer but here goes anyway :-)

If I was to buy a single technical book to start the ball rolling then which one would forum members recomend?

I note the "Inside the metal detector" is promoted on this forum so have any members read this book and does it live up to expectations?

BTW I have very much enjoyed reading some of the many technical postings on this forum. After searching the net for technical information I finally struck gold here :-)

    Regards,

    Ionburn (AKA Des)

Carl and I are the Administrators of the Geotech forum, and the authors of "Inside the METAL DETECTOR".
If you go to the UK Amazon site -> https://www.amazon.co.uk/Inside-Meta...0232748&sr=8-3
you can click on the image of the book and "Look inside". This will give you a sample of some of the contents.
I will leave it to Geotech members to answer your question about "does it live up to expectations?".

If you are interested in metal detecting devices building and constructing hobby, ITMD is practically only such handbook on (English) market.

I have two of it (first edition and somewhat changed second edition too), so it is for me more than up to expectations.

I am in preorder for 3th edition too.

Another vote for the ITMD book. It has good practical info and experimental step by step designs.

After reading this book then it is reading the million threads here for deeper insight on detector circuits.

Are there comparable books on ITMD?

Not in English (except a few of very old book specimen from beginning of transistor era)

Something (now old) is to find in German and Russian, probably Spain too, not sure about French.

                      Hi again,

Many thanks for all the responses to my original posting and for the recomendations for the book.

Thankyou for posting and I followed your advice and had a look at the sample pages which were more than enough to convince me that this is a book for me. Indeed, just reading a few of the sample pages cleared up some of the fog surrounding the technical terminology used in metal detecting.

It was also refreshing to learn that its not just me that felt the metal detecting industry is somewhat "secretive" :-)

BTW thanks for the "tip" regarding clicking on the book cover to reveal the sample pages. I must have visited Amazon books a thousand times and never knew that was an option (red face) so I have learned many new things today.

Thanks again to all for the welcome and for taking the time to post.

                      Kind regards,

                      Ionburn (AKA Des)

My very first detector was built according to the instructions in this book
I think that too little technology is explained in these books.
My English is still too bad for ITMD
