The Alter's range and number of steps is mainly "because they can". There's no point offering 10 freq choices if the hardware( & software?) is capable of more... another manufacturer will come out with a 15 freq machines, and make the "Alter 10" look outdated.
And countering EMI is one good use for a plentiful frequency choice.

Relying on the detector only on its operating frequency ... it simply does not .. you have to consider more factors that in the detector itself affects detection .. that is the depth of detection and also the quality of separation ....
These factors are the strengthTx, the frequency, the software itself and finally the size, and the type of the detector coil ... another important factor is the type and mineralization of the terrain ...
Another important property of frequency is the shift of identification of various conductive objects - depending on the used frequency...
Rutus Alter 71 which works at frequencies from4.4khz to 18.4khz rated as a very powerful and also sensitive detector ... range in the airtest at 0.1gram 24k gold is 15-16cm ... at 14.4 khz..on standard coil 28cm DD ..which means that my test 0.05 gram gold "O" segment detects well a 10cm buried in low mineralized terrain ...
It's one of 3 detectors that can prove it on an 11 "coil .../Equinox in multi programs type2 or a 1F 40khz,...Vista Gold gain 30khz, ...Rutus Alter71 at14,4khz-18.4khz/
Of course, Alter71 also sets the frequency of its task ... and improves the detection quality at both ends of the conductivity spectrum of the object .... depending on what frequency is set .. 4.4khz or 18.4khz ...
continuous change of the frequency setting in 71 steps gives the possibility of excellent adaptation in detection on various mineralized terrains ... when the highest frequency may not be the best, elimination of Emi ,, and affects separation of various conductive objects ...

1. ... This means in practice, for example, that the highest frequency18.4 khz is already too sharp to work in very strong mineralization and the ground is already beginning to echo the ground .. lowering this frequency to 16.6khz allows you to work smoothly and detect .. in such mineralized conditions ... while maintaining similar detection properties ... as with the flood frequency required / 18.4khz / = / sensitivity, range, separation /....
In other detectors, you are more limited by the more compromise frequency selection that is significantly different from each other .. 8-18khz..and here the detection and separation properties will change significantly more ...
The universal frequency range of the coin detector counts frequencies from 7khz -14khz .. with the frequency of 14khz allows much better 2D and3D separation of low conductive objects ..in iron...
