  • Need a little help on electrolytic caps

I did something stupid and left my step-up, step-down, adjustable buck converter out in the shop all winter. It was exposed to temps near zero (f). It now has problems, and I'm wondering if the caps may have frozen. They look OK, but that doesn't mean much. Any help greatly appreciated. I have not removed them, or tested them yet.

    Electrolyte in caps can froze.

But main problem is that froze lead to no longer seal the gasket and thus leaking electrolite.

Thanks, WM6. I haven't seen any leakage yet, but haven't looked at them closely.

It is not like visible fluid leaked, electrolite disappear in air throug no more sealed part of ELCO.
Electrolite carier "insulator" between C plates inside ELCO dries out.

Now THAT I hadn't thought of! I guess I'll order some new caps and see if that solves the problem.

Most probably ELCO caps are issue in old units. But first clean all removable contacts, like IC sockets and alike.

Good idea! I did that last night, and it seemed to be working OK. I also sprayed the whole thing with electrical cleaner. Had considerable dust on it, and maybe got some humidity that caused problems. Really appreciate the help.
