which detector has been the most successful for finds

Here in the UK I would guess at Garret 250 just by numbers sold. At one time a rally would be a sea of yellow. Nearly everyone started with a Garrettt. Metal detecting is a numbers game. You have to walk over it to find it. The main thing with the bell tones is its hard to set it wrong. I would guess in the USA it would be a Tesoro from all the YouTube vids in tots lots

which detector changed the future design

Fisher CZ and explorer became the go to for the beach

The Macro Race as the only cheap detector that could handle salt water at the time

T2 general design and tipping point between analogue over to digital

    Deus for wireless

    NOX for marketing hype

last year on rally's nearly everyone had either the Deus or NOX it seem unless you pay a lot money your not going to find anything

Even than i find almost nothing in last couple years.
And i like to think that i am equipped well.
Conclusion: known sites are exhausted within borders of possible (taking into account technology limits).
Next "bad" thing: too many new hobbyists in this hobby.
15 years ago i could name all the "colleagues" in whole country and today i can't name them in my street!

I agree, almost all sights have been scraped dry of shallow targets. Now it's a deep dive situation.
Expensive metal detectors will never pay for themselves, except in rare case of Viking hoard, which could be found with a cheap tesoro anyways.
