I was a little surprised, too. It was exactly where I left it ( well, where I thought I left it, accurate to 10 metres ... ) , and it had a big 25mm red sticker over the button area, making it stand out a bit. I just headed straight for the spot after the tide had receded from that area, and pretty much saw it straight away, not even any sand covering it.
What really stopped it working was the wet coil. It's wound with cotton-covered Litz, then the rod is fixed in a plastic tube with a couple of lumps of hot-melt glue. So it's not sealed, and the water saturated the cotton. I had to dunk the probe tip in boiling water to soften the hot-melt glue and get the rod out. Then I could wash it and dry it thorougly. After that it was OK. The only electronic part that failed was the main push-button switch, which I have spares from my scrap collection.
