This is the title of an interesting application note on the TI web sight(spra946.pfd). This new DSP processor appears to contain all the on board goodies to handle a metal detector application from frequency generation to demodulation and filtering.

You can do the same thing with a couple of PIC microcontroller for a lot less $'s. AND PIC are much easier to program and the support tools are fairly inexpensive. I am currently building a PIC versoin of Gary's PI machine and with more functionality.

I guess if you are looking at cost and simplicity you could do that, but a couple of pics still ain't the same as a DSP when it comes to signal processing power. They don't have the instruction set. This application note is very basic and hardly uses any of what this processor is capable of. Whats $300. for a development kit, and think of the educational value. Build a good transmit and receive section onto the development protoboard, interface it to your pc and the sky's the limmit on expiermenting with the demodulation and filtering.
