Drack, you've gotten some good replies. It all depends on what you are trying to detect, in what kind of soil, with what kind of history. There is no way to come up with a generic solution, boundary conditions are an absolute must. Ferinstance, mixing in grain-size surface gold nuggets with 100-kg meteorites 5m deep is a non-starter.
