Detect other than metals

Metals time constant vary around some microseconds at minimum threshold. Other materials can have time constants very more small (ns)and their could require a special approach to be detected. I am thinking to a IB setup with a high frequency oscillator i. e. 1Mhz; I am wonder if into the community there are someone that have investigate this thema; it would be very interesting to explore the state of art.
