    At around the 30 min mark they describe using boiling colophony (rosin) to dissolve the epoxy case - certainly much safer than nitric acid! The video is rather long but I found it fascinating and the information may be of use for identifying fake chips

      I've never heard of using rosin to decap a chip. I should try that.

        Yeah, it amazed me too. It appears that it also dissolves the chip carrier too! I will be keen to hear how you get on. I'm almost disappointed that I'm no longer working as a lab assistant where I had ready access to test tubes and a fume cabinet - one of the few downsides to retirement
        PS - didn't mean to hijack the thread - please feel free to move to somewhere more appropriate if you wish.

          Fuming nitric I use .. no not good for you health I built a little heater to sit the chips on to raise the temp of the ic. The encapsulation or decapsulation is an interesting hobby.. LOL
