This is no joke, at White's we got brand new pinpointers returned as being non-functional. When we removed the battery it turned out they had failed to remove the plastic wrapper from the battery. This happened at least a half-dozen times.

      Funny joke:
Man: "Crap, where I've layed down my pinpointer the last time ?!" while turning the whole house upside down!
Wife: "Ooops, sorry dear, its in the bed under my pillow, but I have cleaned it for you ..."
(additional: My wedding ring is also there, so I always dream about you...)

And now: really happened, already a bit later in the evening after some drinks:
"Oh no, I have lost my pinpointer - where is it ?!"
.... while I'm dragging it already for 10 minutes on the belt-fixed-cord behind me over the ground, not checking it! hahaha

Yeah, knowing, recognizing or understanding the basics sometimes is PURE LUXURY!

this is also funny - from 73 years ago - I found it 12 hours ago:

      -

Vintage Electronics: Basic Principles of Radio Receivers (1949)

      Watch it here:

        **off-topic, sorry**
If you view the page source of any B i t c h u t e page, and search for 'mp4' , you will find the location of the video file. They don't mess about with obfuscation / hash-codes / maths tricks etc. Just copy and paste it into the address bar, and save it.

Regarding dumb customers, the other common 'error' is turning the machine on inside their kitchen, where it unsurprisingly goes completely ape-crazy, and concluding it must be faulty. I've seen it on another forum ... "What's wrong with my detector??????!!!!!!!!" type nonsense.

I contacted the seller on Amazon when I first saw that and told them, I asked a sarcastic question that didn't get posted on the pages Q&A. I have seen several listings now.

A year or two ago there was a listing on all the sites for what looked like a Whites knock off that had the analog meter and arm cuff turned around. Yet the gentleman was still out on the beach in the photoshopped picture staring at the arm cuff with meter at his elbow just hunting away apparently. I reached out to them and told them if they send me one to evaluate I will assemble it correctly to show them so they may have a chance at selling one. I shouldn't encourage them but it did not look identical to anything just very close. I noticed it fixed about a year later and they never responded, I didn't think they actually would. I sort made them look stupid the way I worded my message to them, something about not having to be a genius to figure out how to assemble your own product. Perhaps I should have been more understanding. Later

@ pss, no mate that's a prime example of copying a product without knowing its true from and function, it happens a lot with cheap cloned items.
for instance i have a korean scooter as back up transport, its dirt cheap to insure and tax and parts are cheap, chinese cloned parts are even cheaper, but they just miss the mark i bought a rear spring and shocker for my scooter it looked perfect, but the shock absorber did not damp, i returned it they sent another then another, who ever had copied the part had not understood the true function of the central shock absorber.
its the same with the pinpointer they dont know which way to hold so look daft in a photo holding it upside down.
i never did get a working rear spring until i gave up and bought a secondhand Honda part, lesson learned.

I hear you, that is why I was asking for one to evaluate, I knew they were not going to but I would have been happy to assemble it correctly for them. plus at that time they were shooting the moon on the price. You could pick up a good used whites for less. The price is down now probably because for a year they didn’t sell any in part because of the stupid picture. This is the one linked, also is the original picture that they photoshopped taking out the Excalibur (along with the Anderson logo on his shirt) and putting in their detector. They cut the headphones and top of his head out. They have since fixed the photoshopped picture in that they turned the arm cuff and meter around the correct way. As you can see it was not an exact knock off at least externally.

ID:	362794 I wish I would have saved it when it was backwards.

This is my all-time favorite pinpointer, it is an essential part of my gear and I love using it and find myself playing around with it often. It does get a bit chattery but it is built well. It is also as advertised “Simple and convenient to use, which requires no adjustment”.
