well i got the new crystal in the post the other day that i bought off ebay. i fitted it and the detector was not picking up any metal. i guess either the new crystal is no good for the machine. or there is something else going on with the board.

If the LCD is working then the crystal is probably OK, otherwise the processor would not be active.
