It is with great regret that I must announce the passing of Andy Flind (designer of the Magnum Metal Detector, and many others).
Andy passed away peacefully in his sleep at 4:00am on Saturday 5 June, after a short but aggressive illness.
Andy, a TRUE industry icon, had many other projects in the pipeline that would have benefited us here, and of course, all those interested in electronics in general.
Andy's magazine projects, and his postings on many forums were the starting point for many a hobbyist, many of whom have gone one to make a career of electronics. In my case, 90% due to Andy and his work!!
Andy retained his inimitable sense of humour, right until the end, still laughing and joking about things, and, although in constant pain, still had a smile for those who visited him.
Andy's favourite saying was D.I.L.L.I.G.A.F (Do I Look Like I Give A F*#k). It summed up his attitude to things, when people got too involved or worked up about little things, and I for one subscribe to Andy's point of view.
The other love (apart from his wife Christine, and his family, then electronics, not always in that order ;-) ) was BEER...Or rather Real Ale, and Andy's homebrew was mighty potent stuff, but still nectar of the god's.
I moved to Taunton in Somerset in 1989, and little did I know at the time that Andy also lived here. It took me 11 years to find out that one of my childhood heroes, not only lived in the same town, but just over a mile from my house. So, although I only knew him as a friend for just over three years, the depth and breadth of Andy’s self-taught knowledge, along with his “ordinary guy” modesty never ceased to humble me.
I hope you will ALL join me in raising (many) a glass of the amber liquid to Andy's memory, and pray that Heaven is a big enough place to take a man as great as Andy.
Please post your replies here and I will forward them to his wife and family.
