Can EMP be used as recovery equip?

I was wondering if anyone has thoughts about using a small portable EMP device and using it to "energize" the ground. Would this be possible? Would it be possible to "pump" this energy into the ground and somehow "read" the effects, sort of how the MFD's claim to do? Just curious. Thanks.

I believe that is how the old "Depth Doubler" device was supposed to have worked, by charging up the ground and enhancing the target field. Don't know if it really worked, which is inexcusable for me, since I own a Depth Doubler. Never did find time to try it out.

Have the depth doublers been described somewhere in literature?
I would be interested in any hint for a search in this direction.
I remember that electric fences transmit strong impulses to a detector. But I guess that you risk to fry the circuitry if the impulse is to strong.
