Now that I'm done traveling for a while, I'd like to put a little more time into this website. One thing I've been thinking about for months now is switching the forums over to a new format. I wrote the current forum scripts many years ago, when there was very little to chose from, and there were specific features I wanted. Like multiple image uploads, auto-email, and full thread views for printing & emailing.
Now there are lots of forum scripts to chose from, that do everything I want and lots more. Findmall has switched some of their forums to new software, as has TreasureNet, and some other sites. At first, I didn't care for the funky new format, but as I got used to it, found I liked it more & more.
In the switch over, I would like to divvy up the forums into some more specific topics which will help better organize the discussions. I will also switch all of the old posts to the new format, so nothing is lost. (Every post ever made on this web site is still there.) Benefits of a new forum format is better organization, more powerful search capability, easier editor, more image upload options, and cute little emoticons.
So, I'd like everyone's opinion on this move. The software I'm leaning towards is vBulletin. It's $160, a bit more than the free forum software that's available, but has by far the best search engine and most complete features. See http://www.vbulletin.com/forum.
