    From the schematic I found on this site was wondering since the "TL496C" is unavailable does anyone know of a work-around for this ic?

    obsolete. try find up TL499A, LT1307B, MAX756, MAX1674-1676. (-)

        Thanks for the info. I was looking at the "TL499A". Can anyone tell me if the pinouts
        are the same? I have docs on "TL496c" and "TL499A" but being electronicaly illerate, can't decipher and reluctant to fork out 8 bucks to view all of that article. ;-)

            You can nix the voltage multiplier circuit, and just run the detector off a 12v battery pack. Or use a more common ICL7660 (or equivalent) to replace the 496C.
