Detecting Small Gold Nuggets

I know the problem of detecting small gold nuggets.
Has anyone experience on detecting small gold nuggets (1-3 gramm, 2-5 mm diameter)?
What kind of detector technology (PI, IB-VLF, Multifreq., NONDISC/DISC, etc.) works better?
And how deep can they be detected?

What kind of problems occur on especially mineralized soils? Decrease this type of soil the deepth much more?

Eric just posted some good commentary on detecting small nuggets with PI, on the PI forum. I'll add that the response of highly mineralized soil will mask the fast response of small gold nuggets, making them very difficult to detect.
