Who uses metal enclosures and who uses plastic enclosures for their boards(electronics)? Also, I noticed some companies use plastic coil supports while others use Al telescoping types. Does anyone know where these "frames" can be purchased? My homemade PVC and rubber based unit is scary and medieval looking. I am thinking, watch ebay for a junker type detector just for its nice arm gaurd and frame, but if there is a place to buy just that then thats the way I want to go.

I expect most folks use plastic enclosures. A great source for a complete rod assembly is White's, they sell a 3-piece kit for $40. http://www.whiteselectronics.com/miscaccw.php

I have built a few radios in my day, mostly tube types, and using a grounded metal enclosure helps with hand capacitcance issues and also provided some emi sheilding. I just naturally figured a grounded metal enclosure would help, but may be not. Dang, I just bought a extruded Al, very $$$$ box, for this reason. I will give it a try and see if theres any difference. I also have a ABS box around here somewhere I can try out as well. As for the frame, thanks Carl, once again you are a huge help! The metal frame does not interfere with PI operation?

Great job laying out that PCB btw, I like the extra experimenting areas you gave!
