  • Matchless metal locator

I came across this article in your projects section a few weeks ago. My nephews birthday is fast approaching and I figured I would build the matchless metal locator for him to use on out our treasure hunts (its better than digging duty Anyway I built it a week or so ago and it came out nice. I really was not expecting much and the fact that it works makes me glad I built it for him. Its not very good by any means, it can pickup a quarter from about 2". I was wondering if any of you have built this thing? Any ideas on how I can increase it perfromance? I did not use the NPN transistor it called for becasue I didnt have any on hand(BC549C), I used a 2n3906. I am going to replace it with a higher gain low noise unit. I am not looking for anything special, hes only 7, but if I could squeeze out another inch or two he might be able to find something. Thanks for any help, its greatly appreciated by both of us.

A 3906 is a PNP, not NPN. Better double-check that!

Oops! I dont know why I mix those up. I used the 2n3904. What else could be done to boost the perfromance? Could I add another amplifier stage after the first(NPN based one) Or reduce the current limiting resistor of the Tx coil. Maybe use a 12V regulator and boost the battery voltage up to 18V(2 9V in serries) Any thoughts? Thanks again for helping me out.
