Hi Greg,
I experimented with wireless headphones a while back. They will work but certain things have to be done for them to work well.
Now, I only tried one type of RF headphones and they didn't work that well with a PI so I tried infrared types. I ended up using Radio Shack IR units since they were on sale and were totally compatible with some Koss units I had..
Do they add weight? Yep, but not that much. The battery will weigh as much as anything since I used a separate battery for the transmitter and that had to be attached to the machine externally. Normally, the transmitter uses a separate 12V wall wart for power, but I used a 7.2V used Li Ion battery I bought surplus. It worked fine.
Now, the down side of IR type headphones is they will not work or not work well in bright sunlight. To work you have to shield the heaphones from the direct sunlight. So, some form of shade has to be built to totally shield against direct sunlight. Fortunately, since the transmitter was down low on the detector, I could shield the headphones from the light but still pick up the IR signal.
The shields looked much like 1/4 of a hollow ball. That is about the best way to explain what seemed to work best for me.
Now, the headphones do act strange since you can't turn your head that much and you have to be careful of how you sweep to have a decent consistent signal, so it does take some getting used to, but they will work.
