    Hi Greg,

    You asked about wireless headphones and I mentioned infrared type as one that will work. I had tried FM type earlier but didn't have much luck.

    Well, I went back and did a little work with the FM type and found one can get them to work also. The big problem I had before was the type of audio out when initially testing them. The output was a square wave and wasn't a/c coupled. This creates two problems.

    When I tried them the signal was totally distorted when it worked and the distortion was so severe, one couldn't tell as to what was happening. Now, the simple solution that made them useable was a basic in line volume control. Once I installed one, I could adjust the volume into the FM transmitter and obtain a fairly decent signal.

    As for adding weight to the detector or in the headphones themselves, that is totally adjustable and depends upon the FM setup used. If you use a totally isolated FM unit operating at its own frequency, such as 900 mhz, then one has to look carefully at the transmitters to see how they are powered and how much weight they will add. Generally, the headphone portion is quite light to begin with.

    An alternative is to use a FM transmitter and a simple FM receiver combination. This will work fine in many areas where it isn't conjested with FM stations. This type will add very little weight, maybe a few oz's at best.

    I have now successfully tried the small Dynex transmitter I got from Pickyourdeals on Ebay. The cost was about $11 or so. The unit transmits on 88+ mhz and has for separate settings, all powered by 2 AAA batteries.. The receive setup can be something as simple as a pocket FM radio, or even radio headphones.

    Now, for me, making the combination work did take some effort. The raspy sound that happened as a result of the distorted signal made it basically not useable. Reducing the audio signal going to the transmitter was the solution.

    I am in the process of trying a 900 mhz setup now. It looks like it will work, but the transmitter is a little bulky size wise. Hopefully, it can be modified and placed in a smaller housing.

    The bottom line is it can be done and it can work quite well. Just plan on spending a little time and money to find what works best.
