  • HELLO, I NEED TO FIND A SUNKEN CAT THRU ICE

hello, i got passed over to this bb because i need to find a metal dector that would help me find a cat that sunk thru the ice in 1957. sterling was the last guy in the seat of this winter freigting cat and at the age of 80 he would like to salvage the cat. once savaged he would like to be the first guys back in the seat.
we have a good idea where the cat is and with the ice we can do a good grid pattern with the gps. the cat is in 120 feet of water with a rock bottom and it is 12 tons of steel.
so what do you guys suggest to use on a project like this and we don't have a big budget, in fact almost no budget.

here are the pistures of the sinking in 1957.

I think a magnetometer would be the best, but i have no experience of it.I dont know if it will detect so deep....but 12t of steel is perfetc....
    good luck,
    fred.

This might sound a bit stupid, But its cheap.

Since you think you know Aproximately where it is, Lay out a Grid on the ice in that area. Knowing the Aproximate Size of the cat, Drill Appropriate holes through the Ice based on is size.

Than Drop a Heavy Powerful Magnet on a long rope, down into each hole. One at a time. Until you get it to stick to something.

****Maybe even a home made Electromagnet so you can release it as needed. It Could be a 120 Volt Electro-magnet, using 18 AWG Lampcord as the rope.
A Power Inverter with the ouput Rectified to DC, and a 12 volt car battery as the Power Source. Nice and Portable.

Might be time consuming, but it should fairly inexpensive and should work.

      Hope this Helps..........Gary

thansk guys, my sreach area will be about 2kms by 2 kms so it will be very big for searching with a magnet. i have an underwater camera i'm going to use since the water is very clear. i have freinds wh prostect for a living and they are saying use a magatronmeter to find a good hit then send the camera down and look around.
would that ground penatrating radar work or too exensive.

i add more to my website with some more details so click on.

Something else you might try a good fish finder aka. sonar. You'd have to cut far fewer holes in the ice and it should give you a good idea of how it's sitting on the bottom.

I'm sorry I'm not a sonar junky so I don't have a specfic model I could recommend. Hummingbird makes some good lower cost units and then are the real pricey types.

Here's an address that'll give an idea. The Hummingbird 900 series look good.
