  • New Project

Its 2006 and I am putting the final touches on my latest project a 3 axis table top CNC. I am ready to start a new project. I am going to build some treasure hunting gadget. I have two metal detectors and a super sensitive metal that the manufacture calls a mineral detector probe. So building a metal detector is out. I have a small machine shop plenty parts and electronic test equipment and gadgets laying around. I should be able to prototype circuit boards with my CNC. I have a B.S. in Physics and work as a Nuclear Instrumentation Scientist. I am no stranger to physics, electronics, mathematics, etc. so does any have any super cool treasure hunting gadget ideas that they would like to build or any suggestions please post. If any one would be willing to join forces and build something please let me know.

Uhhhh, if you or somebody else could design a simple, suitable for amateur building Overhauser magnetometer, that would be mighty cool.

Actually I myself could give a shot at it, but probably not in year 2006.

      Overhauser magnetometer

I could probably do that but I am limited as far as knowing how it actually works. I suspect also that it is going to require some high frequency equipment (RF generator and spectrum analyzer). I do have PC based versions of both but they probably wont provide corect values at high frequency's. This means I would have to purchase additional equipment. These are fairly costly items. If you could provide me with some technical reference to the theory behind it. I could give it a shot.

Hi J.H., sounds like you have a lot of experience and Knowledge. I think it is neat that you want to help someone with a project. Who knows maybe I can come up with something too. Take and nice to meet you J.H.. de the Wirechief, CET.

          New Project

I am eager to learn more about the science of treasure hunting and metal detecting instrumentation. Yes I am new to the forum. Nice to meet you Wirechief. If anybody could point to some good reference please do. You can find my web site here.

              Proton Mag

This is looking like a possible venture.

I like the fact that I can change fluids in the sensor to find what works best. I also like the fact that they are two different versions to build. I may write a program for my PDA to data log and plot intensities at different points or I may write a program for a laptop instead. I don’t know right now.

                ----------------

Cesium is not realistic for amateur. It' s somewhat a pain to build even if you have access to industrially produced cesium lamp/necessary optics. Making those at home - that's very very close to impossible.

Overhauser on the other hand shouldn't be much more complicated than usual proton magnetometer. Yes, the pumping is done with RF, but IIRC for commonly used radicals it was on the order of 14 MHz or approx so, that's a banal shortwave range, heck, radio hams play with them all the time and at much larger power levels than necessary here.

                  No, not that one

There are a lot better Proton Mag projects to build out there than this one...
I would look at Koheler or Bayot projects before going for this one. You can use different sensors on any of them if that is the aspect that is attracting you to this particular project.
