  • Anyone with a 2-box?

I'm posting this question on behalf of my Chinese friend Hunterq3:

Does anyone know if a 2-box detector is capable of detecting a jar of gold and silver coins (say about 1Kg) at a depth of 1.5m?
Alternatively, what about a P.I. detector?

If you look at Gary's detecting website at http://www.garysdetecting.co.uk/hoard_test.htm it appears that none of the detectors were able to pick up the buried hoard at 0.64m. However, neither 2-box or P.I. detectors were tested.

If anyone here owns a 2-box detector (or a powerful P.I.) please could you tell us what sort of depths to expect for various sized objects? Is 1Kg at 1.5m a totally unreasonable expectation?

Surplus: mine detector. In some part I read can detect a 20 circular form at 1.5 m, but requires to use in no-contaminate sites. Also read than can detect a 0.5 gram spring at 5 cm, no discriminative MD. Here links and schematich, parts, etc.:

The ML GP's should have no problem with a jar of coins in a bottle at 4.5 feet. Even if the coins are oxidized and not electrically contacting each other well we can say that a jar should have at least 129 coins. I know GP's can detect one coin at 2 feet. So 4.5 feet is 2.25 times deeper. 2.25^6 = 129. So on paper it seems 129 good coins could be detected at 4.5 feet.

At 5 feet (1.5m) it might be pushing it.

I'm curious about that test, so I plan to try it myself. I'm going to bury several pounds of US silver coins at around 3 feet, possibly this weekend. I have three 2-box detectors to try, and several PI, including Minelab.

I would be very interested in the outcome of 2 box and PI tests. There is an additional point here though. Aren't Minelabs like most PIs really hot on low conductors. I can air test a small cache(12 nickels) with my PI and a stock coil at 20" but can not do the same for 12 dimes. Perhaps the Minelabs would fail with silver but pass with nickel(or gold). An even more interesting test would be with a silver/nickel mix representing a silver/gold cache.

Diameter also makes a big difference. So dimes have smaller diameter.

I'm not sure how big a jar 129 U.S. quarters makes. Hopefully it's reasonable. All I know is it makes $32.25

I'm sure that if the quarters are randomly positioned and not oxidized that a good ML GP can detect it 4.5 deep away from city noise. That's my bet.

I haven't compared gold & silver depths on my ML (I have a SD2200 with 18" coil). But on PIs with a sample delay adjustment, you just take the delay out to 20-30us for better sensitivity to silver.

I had planned to use a cache of silver quarters. I might bury a second cache of half dollars. Depends on how hard it is to dig a 3-foot hole... my property is largely sandrock, which is a synonym for concrete.

I has buried (since 12 years) a copper ashtray (12 X 12 cm) and in this 51 coins (no nickels, only copper and bronze) of different sizes, include some big perforates from China justly! at 80 cm depth and can't detect with my machines and of mine friends. Today over the objects there are floor and construction.

In other part (free of construction) there are 53 bronze coins medium size at 85 cm and also can't detect.

OF COURSE, in metalic jar is possible to detect at this depth, maybe 1 meter or more...

Thanks Esteban, although I doubt this very old mine detector would have the sensitivity to detect anything at 1.5m

Carl - this is the sort of reply I was hoping to receive. It is a practical test that will directly answer the question. After digging a 3 foot hole, you'll probably wish you hadn't offered. I guess that digging a 1.5m (~5 feet) hole is a little out of the question, but a test with the detector 2 feet above the ground would be useful. I await your results with much interest. Please don't strain your back...

Esteban - This is also interesting. What detectors have you tested?

                    Hunterq3, 您好!我们得等Carl。

Everyone else - thanks also for your thoughts.

                      Hi

I try with White's 6000, Garrett ADS, Wilson VLF 710, two boxes TM808, etc. But the items isn't in metalic container, in other words, directly in the soil. In metalic jar, is other history... Hope to detect sparse coins at great depth is difficult.

I suppose that a jar of coins with weight of 1 kg is about the same as a soda can so it is impossible for 2 box detector and very difficult  for P.I with large coil to detect it.

                            Hi detectoman
I can't understand you but if the ground is not dry then is impossible to detect the jar at 1.5m with PI and big coil. Any way 1.5m is a big depth for objects detecting.

                              Strange tests

I was today just studying carefuly those tests on garysdetecting site very much. You will notice that the digger of the hole has long hair and is unshaven. Also if that is not bad enough he uses a tape measure that is in centimeters only and is green. What type of person would have such a tape measure. I would suggest an “East European” or worse. I would not take to seriously any results from such tests. Please excuse my bad English. Very much we hope you like it . Good day from Borat
