  • Carl, After reading all 8 pages I got to doing some tests of my own and over here in the UK I can air test a 2 pence piece which is a low grade copper coin and I got a repeatable signal at 16" or 400mm so i then got a small plastic money bag, 1 coin weighs 0.2248ozt and the 50 i used for the test weighs 11.240ozt so when i waved them in front of the coil
I got a 2 way signal at 24" or 600mm and using the 3rd tone on my machine I could up set the treshold at and beyoned 28" or 700mm, these low grade copper coins will rust and depending on the date give massively differant VDIs

All these coins would fit in a cigarette pack, I'm always doing tests of some sort like
the thin frame on my glasses my detector will pick them up 45" or 1150mm,
my Zippo is picked up at 24" and up to 28/29", I hope this helps,

    John

    • 1 kg cache test was yesterday !

The Jeohunter has cracked the 500 grams limit @ 2 feet / 66 cm !

At very high mineralized soil with just 70% sensitivity! With beercaps! Cheers!

When using UK 1p and 2p coins for tests, it 's best to use the copper/bronze ones only. The more modern copper-plated steel ones will give erratic readings, depending on condition. The ones produced from 1971 up to 1982-ish are almost certainly the 97% copper types - a magnet will tell easily.Regards.

Thanks for that info Skippy, I'm going to date them and then pick the right ones for the
test, in that bag the coins weughed about 350gms so i got another bag and that took it
over 800+grams so I will do the test with 500Gms and also use the same weight that
Carl used, with the 800grams i got an iffy signal at 700mm and that was without using
the 3rd tone which is an all metal tone so fingers crossed,

FunFinder weldone on your test thats great news at 26 1/2", good job and thanks for the update

That's great auminesweeper you also want to do that test.

You may use some more detailed in-air tests first.

            Check detection signal and distance with 1, 5, 10, 25, 50 and 100 coins.
Try different diameters of the space the coins are scattered.
Check if there is a better result if coins are very close together.
Use different search coils if possible.
Simulate mineralisation with wide layer of bricks or something above coins.

Good luck and please tell us, which detector(s) you're using for test.

            • G Day Funfinder, well heres the Air test Results that you asked for and I hope this is of use,
Please note that the lower measurements are diggable signals and the Max figures
are the maximum using the Third tone that my machine uses to alert you of the items
pressents, Doing these tests I used the standard coil that the machine came supplied
with and with the gain at maximum in the Relic mode and in the Prospect mode the gain
was set at +1, the Machine I used is the Whites MXT Pro fitted with the standard 12"
concentric coil as supplied with the unit,

              1) 1 coin = 1" Relic mode = 35cm =14" 3/16, Max 50cm = 19" 11/16

              2) 4 coins = 2" square Relic mode Dig 47cm = 18"1/2, Max = 57cm = 22"7/16
              Prospect mode 56cm = 22"1/16, Max = 64cm = 25"3/16

              3) 9 coins = 3" square Relic mode 56cm = 22"1/16, Max = 78cm = 30"1/16
              Prospect mode not done.

              4) 16 coins = 4" square Prospect mode dig at 800cm = 31"1/2, Max 900cm = 35"7/16

              5) 25 coins = 5" square Relic mode dig 72cm = 28"3/8, Max 85cm = 33"7/16
              Propect mode dig 90cm = 35"3/8, Max 100cm = 39"3/8

              6) 36 coins = 6" square Relic mode dig 75cm = 31"1/2, Max 92cm = 36"3/16, please note I got VDIs at 60cm=23"5/8 to 64cm=25"3/16 in relic
              Prospect mode dig 95cm = 37"3/8, Max 105cm = 41"5/16.

These coins were stuck with double sided tape to a sheet of 1/4 plywood board
and a 3rd of the way through the test i decided to use a hot glue gun because
it is quicker and when you want to take the coins off the board the glue will
stick to the board and not your coins so there is no need to clean the coins
              afterwards.

The Max distance is just audiable in the third tone threshold based signal,
and the coins were glued flat in a square each time adding enough coins
to keep the pattern square, Due to EMI and the time was around 17.30/5.30pm
using the prospect mode I could not turn it up to +3(Maximum) and so +1
was the highest i could set the machine,

My next tests will be Burried tests in Med/High mineralization ground,

              I hope this helps,

              John

              • Just to correct my last post, It was not the MXT Pro, IT WAS the MXT 300
with the standard 300 coil, sorry about that,

i am really confused about what brand and model will help me in treasure hunting , here some information about the field ,there is rocks salt and rich mineral soil .
am searching in 2.5-4 meter depth .
target is not less than 5 kilograms of old made gold coins ,- no raw gold or nuggets at all- .
my target is 100 years old buried inside wooden box or a jar
might be thin made layers of charcoal and sand on top of the target
i need fast accurate reading while scanning underneath . (imaginary devise)
i need a devise to eliminate searching area tells me that my target will be around 500 square meter or less .

                  thank you all

                          Hi auminesweeper!

Thanx for making an not forgetting that test.

This is very good result and it shows the coins don't need to have any contacts inbetween them and only the 2 dimensional size of the metal counts and not how thick it is.

Now we look forward to your tests with buried coins and please compare the difference if depth results in all metal mode and with discrimination on.

                          Good luck!

I looked back at your previous post, but could not see what weight of coins you used for the cache. Also, you state you buried the coins at 20". Was the 20" to the top of the container or the bottom? Note the original cache test was 2kg buried at 24" to the top of the container.
