I am a sometimes gold prospector and have wondered about these for years. Have seen many references in OLD accounts in explorations about uses, and some current ones too. But the proof is in the puddin'.....I'm not willing to buy a $1000 item just to find it's all hogwash. Does anyone have some experience with these?

I am not fan of LRL, becouse there are many philosophical questions "Work or not work ?" , "In what I believe?" or "Have I enough money to trow it away?"
The technical questions " How this (LRL) work?" or "What physics law or effect is in use in LRL ?" are without answers from manufacturers.Actually they explain with some muddy deffinitions and accentuate on belief(!) in efficiency !
So, it is your money, you can do what you want.

LRL
After a lot of years of employment and experiments with the detectors I think very seriously of beginning experiments with lrl. Up to before little time I did not believe in them. When however I saw a friend finding objects in distance up to 800 m with a hairpin from timber I decided to dedicate enough time and in this method. As beginning I took a book and read. With it has made dizzy with the words insistence and effort. I will begin the trials in the fields in October that my works will be less. Up to then waiting. Who knows.
Never you do not say never.

I agree with you. In any case my friend has problem only in the localisation of gold. The remainder metals him it locates without particular problem

Hey Goldcorundum,
I've had a bit of a muck around with a set of brass and copper dowsing rods down here in Oz. Both appear to work no differently. What I've found is that they can get you into a general area, but they don't go "X" marks the spot. It's worked for me 4 times now to point me in the right direction, even down to approximately how many paces to take to get to the general location. And in one instance I've been able to work out rough boundaries of the area to look in (with results inside the boundaries).
Once in the general area the rest is up to you and your detector. Now this could also possibly be co-incidence but I'm finding that the more I play with them, the more I seem to be able get more info out of the rods even though I'm still a little sceptical. Maybe it's because you become more "focused" and that focus transfers to when you are using the detector. I wouldn't say that I'm 100% convinced just yet, but I'm beginning to lean towards a growing belief that perhaps there is something to it. I know that my detecting mate certainly has become a believer ! So much so that the dowsing rods have been affectionately renamed the "Sodd Rods" ha ha.
But I wouldn't go spending a lot of money on a set. Mine originally cost $20 and were made by a dowser and the copper set I made up myself to see if there was any difference. I've also been told that if you glue a little nugget or tiny bit of gold to the end of each rod they will work even better, I've also been told that you have to physically hold a bit in your hands (as well as hold the rods) so there's more scope there for further experimentation.
Cheers
Mike.

The most rigorous testing of the method yet carried out was undertaken in and around a number of churches by Richard Bailey, Eric Cambridge and H. Denis Briggs and the results published in Dowsing in Church Archaeology, 1988 - leaving no doubt about potential of the techinique.
Again I have to point out that this technique involved hazel twigs or copper rods - for sure you do NOT have to buy any $1000 device.
Personaly I have not ever tryed dowsing - but I doubt this way of finding water etc. would survive for millennia if no use from it.

Geo,
Well said and hopefully simple enough for him to understand !
Fact is, you have to keep an open mind until you are convinced within yourself one way or the other. Who would have thought 50 years ago that detecting would become the hobby that it has today ? Back then it was all about pans, sluices etc etc.
Cheers
The Sodd.

very familiar feelings....just feelings tho ???
Your feedback really hits home to my personal experience and this is mostly what I am looking for since I really believe that if universal results are had by everyone, all the good stuff will be found PRONTO !
I have had 2 detectors and before my 1st one, I doubted if IT was a scam I was throwing money away on...(1974'ish). It Did work.......
One interresting thing that happened (or seemed to happen), was that it seemed that I found more silver coins if I findered a silver coin in my pocket as I detected...????? And I was in virtually VIRGIN territory.....a huge old jr. hogh school field I personally played on many years ago. I found sporadic silver but I NOTICED a distinct good ratio of silver to junk coins if I held a silver coin in my hand....( I had never heard of dowsing at that point) I kept a log of finds, areas searched, etc. so I could review results....It seemed wierd enough that I adopted this superstition as a M.O.
JUmping ahead........MANY years later, using a new LOBO Tesoro, which I got for my new hobby of prospecting, I was searching a private property field about a football field size, and had found some old plantation artifacts...
I hadn't detected in many years for a lot of reasons, but I remembered the silver coin in the hand superstition......I dug out one and aimlessly ambled thru this field and walked right over one of the only 2 silver items I found in the TOTAL area of this field. I even took a lawnmower to this field if it was too long since the owner had it done. I proceeded to systematically do the whole field and it was weeks later before I found the other silver piece.
JUmping ahead.....On a prospect out of Las Vegas I saw a homeowner next to a n old mine in the desert I was looking at and stopped to chat up the type of mine it was.......while talking of this and my walk up thru an interresting wash just up ahead we somehow got on the subject of the guy wyo came with the well-drillers he hired to dig him a well and he was convinced he saw something NOTICABLE happen to the dowsing rod the guy used and he ended up with the best well in his area to the point that when his neighbor's wells "went muddy and dribbled" his had good flow and clear water.... this man was sure that the guy found the strongest source of water with a dowsing rod.
Going back, a neighbor of the 2 silver's field saw the Gas Company worker using some wierd thing to mark the road for digging up the old pipe to hook up a new extension of the old gas line. The worker showed the neighbor the tool which was a kind of antenna that pointed down the gas line....he looked down the antenna in the direction the pipe went and marked the road accordingly all the way down the street, then they brought in the heavy equipment and dug up the whole neighborhood's street on that information! The neighbor told me 'cause he knew I detected....He is an Air Traffic Controller......This thing had accurately located the old pipe.......
Jumping ahead again......After going thru the dozen embarrising and unbelieving trys at panning in an old supposed gold mining area of my old neighborhood outside Washington D.C., I finally found and believed gold was truly there......round about I eventually located a few better producing spots and one day there were 2 dudes there who thru the course of time I saw they had a dowsing thing......I had heaRD BY NOW OF THIS AND i ASKED IF i COULD SEE IT. This is why I am totally unable to rely on my own opinion.....
It was a black and white Thomas's Electroscope....I had seen advertised in mags......I was standing right across the stream from an old adit to a known and documented gold mine...I pointed the antenna DOWN well off level to be SURE it did not swivel by gravity and aimed it slightly away from the tunnel thinking it would have to move if it worked at all. I had read that you have to think of what you want to find so I pictured the (tiny) gold pieces I had found here....with eyes closed and trying to focus, I thought a spider was crawling up my neck, so ready to swat it, I opened my eyes and it was the antenna had swung around and was touching my neck! It had swung up at least 2 inches off level 'cause I had it well below that in my hand.....
Relief-good no spider, Suprise-hey, this thing just moved!, Realization-this thing just pointed to the only good dredging spot I have done in this stream, and the possesive prospector mentality in me immediately took over and I handed the thing back to these guys and made a remark like ...oh, I found some dust over there before or something, and said thanks and good day...
In fact I was more than anything embarrased because it showed these guys (if they thought enough to try out where this thing had pointed), where a spot with gold "pieces" was, as well as a red oxide layer I later found out was an indicator for the gold pieces I had previously had found there too!
Life happens tho, and a fun and successful dredging trip under the Yuba, years of struggling to work to pay rent in San Diego, and now stranded in Florida I never have been able to "gamble the money I can't afford" to find out if these things really work!...This site, well informed, has me still arguing w/myself on this subject...the electronics say no, but it was no spider!

Dowsing
Dowsing works.
It works in response to subconcious dictation. It is a response to intuition. Dreams are exactly the same business. Some are representative some are fiction and some are pre-vision (premonitory). Depends on the person.
Some detectorists laugh at it and know it doesn´t work becasue they tried it and failed... then these same treasure hunters particulary some seniro ones do do feel a hunch for a specific place or treasure. The place appeals to them, and dreams reveal to them such areas.... then they go there with a good electgronic metal detector and make a recovery... That is dowsing.
