  • PI Detection Capability ?

I have been working on PI detectors since few months.
I wanted to know how much will the detection will vary if we horizontal instead of vertical.
For eg. consider a nail (50mm long and 4mm wide):
How far can we expect to detect this target when it is standing vertical and then horizontal ?

Tech gurus kindly give me some approx estimate of the distance plz.
I know we will be loosing a lot when target is horizontal instead of vertical n thats because of field generated, am loosing about 40% when target is horizontal.
I have tried both spiral and mesh shaped coils but didnt helped.

    Cheers,
    Michael

Sounds like you might have first data on this.

As i have told earlier, am loosing about 40% when the target is horizontal instead of vertical. for eg. am getting 30cms when vertical and about 17cms when horizontal.

Can u exlpain me why ? and any ideas how to overcome it ?

I may have mis-read this... are you saying that you can detect a nail deeper when it is vertical (standing up) than when it is horizontal (laying flat)?

Yes i can detect nail deeper when its laying vertical. i know this is because of the field generated by the coil, but should the change be of magnitude of 40% when its horizontal.
          Any comments carl ?

            Copper

            Hi,

and for final confusion, test it with copper (f.e. copper-coin) it is vice-versa!
