Start with FFT phase detector, if you manage that = 50% job done.
Nice, thank you for your suggestions

begin to learn from book George Overton, The Voodoo Project. i think it will help although it is PI project.
also ITMD book is nice for the start.

Metal detectors and building them( mostly reproducing existing designs of analog vlf and pulse induction designs) was hobby of mine. Understand the circuitry is only part of the story. The real magic is knowing why it's done the way it's done. This is a specialized field. You must know about the properties of soil(ground) and how it impacts on the design parameters. Then you will have big appreciation for why design engineers are constrained by certain choices and trade offs. ITMD book is the very best way to get straight to the point. Then read all the threads on the forum, the more the better.

Download all the patents relevant to the subject ( from the patents page). Read jnd study them intently.

If you manage to do these things with passion and enthusiasm, then you will be rewarded with a deep understand of 5his specialized field.

I will also say that the more advanced cutting edge stuff is like frosting on the cake. But you must first have the cake to begin with. The cake obviously represents the fundamentals. Read and absorb as much as you can. Build and experiment as much as you can. If you're having fun then you're on the right track.
