Need to ID this detector found at a Flea Market

Hello,

I need a bit of help to find out what detector is this, I found it at a flea market.

On the board it writes PE EP387

I am afraid to plug it in at 12v, but I assume that might be the voltage.

Could it be VLF or BFO?

The PE on the circuit board made think Popular Electronics. But It turns out to be Practical Electronics from Carl's archive site.

similar to Magnum and Shadow , yup. then it is VLF. probably true static mode.

Yes it seems like that is the right one similar to Magnum.

Ive had something similar before in terms of shape and size, I believe was a CScope 1000, besides it was a bit bulky it had some good sensitivity, a quarter at approx 25 cm in air. I did not test the discrimination. After a while I sold it.

The circuit board in the article is marked PE EP385, yours is EP387. Maybe if you search the author and later issues of Practical Electronics there may be a complete article for your unit?

At the bottom of the parts list. It states "Kits available from Maplin Electronic Supplies LTD" Maybe some of the UK people here remember Maplin?

Sorry to beat a dead horse. But after looking at the article once again it does includes both pcbs ep385 and ep387, So I believe this is a Magnum1. The builder got creative and made the meter more visible. It's an interesting design.
