Ground balancing by all metal channel with analog meter

I don't know what you mean by "driving a meter" but there are designs that create a third "G" channel. The Tesoro Bandidos and White's Classics do it by clocking a third demod. The White's Goldmaster 2/3 do it by deriving the G channel from the X & R channels using resistive subtraction. IMO, that is the easier method. Conceptually, it looks like this:
