  • Cell Phone Style Electronics In Detectors

    Does anyone has any input on cell phone style circuitry we are now experiencing in the Detector world? Have components become too small for detectors with the current downsizing of machines? Are they less reliable over time than older larger component detectors? I know my older detectors such as gpx4000, and 4500 and my MXT Pro seem to last and last. Decades. Are these modern type tiny electronics leaving power and performance on the table, unused? I can sorta see this in the PI detector electronics, seems the gpx series like gpx5000 seems to be more powerful, deeper, and take a wider range of coils than modern cell phone style detectors, and longevity seems much higher in these older unit with larger electronic components? I know most my cell phones do not have a long life with this tiny circuitry now. A few yrs at most.

    The tiny SMT circuitry is just as robust as the old through-hole circuitry. What tends to break is either the UI components (keypad, display) or the mechanical packaging. Back in the good 'ol days the enclosures were metal and the UI was knobs and switches, and if anything went wrong it was pretty easy to repair. My last 2 cell phones went in the garbage because the bodies fell apart, not the circuitry. Same with my last laptop.

      Metal detectors with using of cell phone like user interface exists now, but they are manufactured by very serious companies. The need of powerful microprocessors, serious firmware and blue-tooth interface make this projects not convenient for the huge mass of MD hobbyists in this forum.

        Using of micro-SMD components for analog parts of MD will not reduce the total overall size of the MD - others relatively big parts: the search coil and the flexible size stick will be the same.
