New here. Looks like a good forum you have going. I have a question about a detector I'm looking at. Its a Teknetics Mark 1 hip mount. I can pick it up for under $100. I currently have a Whites early model Blue & Gray and a Whites 6000 di series 3 hipmount. I was just wondering how the Mark 1 compares to the Whites and what the usual going rate for them is. Any additional information about these would be great. Thanks for the help.

Try Carl's forum at: http://members5.boardhost.com/MetalDetecting/index.html , there are a number of aficionados of the Mark 1 lurking on that forum. George Payne, I believe, is also in the process of miniaturizing (then selling) the MK 1. ..Willy. BTW, in the right ground it's a highly regarded detector.

Hi Eagle-Eye,
Like Carl, if you decide to not buy the Teknetics Mark 1, let me know also. I am interested too.
I personally feel the Tek Mark 1 was and still is one of the best detectors ever made. If used correctly, the depth is greater than the other detectors you mentioned, in my opinion. The key is to use it by sweeping slowly, and in bad ground, just raising the coil a little more. If swept too fast for the ground conditions, then the other two detectors will go deeper.
BTW, is the Mark 1 the Red model or the Gray model?

I will not only agree with all that's been said I will raise you one. I feel that the Mark 1 was a decade or two ahead of its time. I used one from the time they were on the market until just a few years ago. It took that long, in my opinion, for everyone else to surpass it. Just imagine if they had continued in business! I still will use it on occassion depending on the situation and the type of hunt site.
In my opinion it was the best detector made in its respective time frame. And I would not part with the one I have for $10,000. Well.............maybe for ten i might consider it!

I might as well start a good rumor about the old Mark 1. It seems there is room for improvement in the depth capabilities in the old machine, according to the designer, George Payne.
I tossed an idea his way and, hopefully, he will give it some serious thought. The idea was to provide the specifics of how to improve the depth via a tutorial.
One has to realize that George makes his living designing metal detectors, so there will be a cost to the project.
I would be happy to pay for such a project. Hopefully, others will be too since this type of project would be a forerunner to a book George is considering writing.
I assure you, he has a tremendous amount of knowledge that is well worth the price even if it cost as much as a typical textbook.
BTW, I have already requested the first copy and have offered to pay for it up front.

Teknetics Mark 1
I found a pretty interesting site that lists very detailed field reports for many detectors. I found one on the Tek Mark 1:
http://www.losttreasure.com/fieldtests/
Go to Teknetics and then to "the worlds first programmable detector" 9000
Pretty interesting stuff there.

X-100 & Mark-1
Willy
I told myself, if I had started with an X-100 instead of an mark-1, I would still be using the X-100 Today. I use to own the Exact X-100 you now own willy.
I have done Air test On both my Mark-1 and the X-100 .
The X-100 will out gun the Mark-1 in the all metal air test by 3". In the Discriminate mode though with the X-100 set to sharp mode and max sensitivity and the mark-1 set to max sensitivity they are equal, except the X-100 will pick up a nickel 2" deeper. The X100 felt twice as heavy as the mark-1 because of the poor balance with the handheld configuration compared to the mark-1 Handheld. To me the X-100 and the Mark-1 are
two of the very best designs that came out of the 80's, they both are excellent with the X-100 being a More Versatile machine. You can't go wrong
with either.

Mark 1
I Got the Mark 1 today. The guy ended up giving the thing to me. The battery clips were not in the best shape. I broke three trying to clean them. Everything else looks great. I rigged it up with some wire and it powers up. Couldn't actually use it though. Anyone ever replaced battery clips or have any suggestions that might get this thing going. It wasn't the easiest to get apart with those sticky side labels.

Before you go too far, you might want to call Keith Wills at East Texas Metal detectors. He is the expert on the Mark 1 and has a wide variety of parts for them.
Here is the link to his site.

I expect he can tell you the best route to take.

Yup, I was surprised when the X-100 outdid my Coinstrike. I really wish Compass could come up with the bux to release an updated X-100 (smaller, better on batts, maybe an LCD 'cause it's the thing). Now, all I need to get is a 5x10" DD for it and it's off to the gold fields. ..Willy.

Teknetics Mark 1
I finally got the Mark 1 going today. Had to replace all of the battery contacts. They were very thin and several were broken. I did not use exact replacments, I put in a newer style. The Mark 1 did not have the best design for battery compartments.
I briefly tried the unit out and it seems to work very well. The detection depth was very impressive. I will have to read and reread the instruction book and play with it some. The variable pitch tone adjustment is new to me, but seems to be a nice feature.
Not sure whether I'll keep it or not. I'm still very happy with my Whites Blue & Gray.
Thanks for the previous information. If anyone has any operating tips, please send them along.
