If a piece of iron stays in the ground for a long period of time does it get magnetized by the earth's magnetic field.

Weak...very weak. Alternative field produced in coil will cancel it easy.
I know what are you pointing at!
If that iron item has some "radiating" preference, than we wouldnt need TX at detectors, only RX, to "sniff" arround for simillar metals...this could be pretty tricky, beware, you might become LRL'st!!!
