  • Need DIY plans for BFO metal detector

    Dear friends,

I have a 13 year old grandson and would like to introduce him to metal detecting and thought it would be fun to help him build a BFO metal detector.

I would like a traditional design, i.e. electronics box mounted at the upper end of a tubular stem and a coil at the lower end.

Does anyone know where I could find a good set of plans with step-by-step instructions, including diagrams or photos ?

    Thanks much !

      Morgan,

Thanks ! The Chemelec site is really neat.

Years ago, I took a home study course in basic electricity, which included house wiring, electric appliance diagnostics and repair, and built my own volt/ohm, amp meter from a kit. This has enabled me to fix many appliances and add circuits in my home. Over the years I have continued to study to broaden my knowledge of electrical devices and circuit components, but not much with electronics, so am lacking in this area.

I did build the hand-held pinpointer shown on Toms Treasures Internet Magazine website: http://www.tomstreasures.com/probe.html, following the very detailed instructions with pictures, so have the tools and some experience soldering the tiny stuff. However, my knowledge of electronic circuit components, how they operate and the different identification codes, is slim, so would need "instructions for dummies" in order to build the BFO metal detector. I would be lost just going from the schematic alone.

I will take a closer look at the Chemelec site and maybe Email them for further help. In the meantime, if anyone knows of a set of plans that include step-by-step instructions (with photos would be a real bonus !), I would really appreciate your reply.

Thanks in advance for the help everybody !

            Digger & Guest....thanks for the links !

My thanks to "digger barns" and the anonymous guest, both of whom provided links to BFO metal detector schematics with instructions.
