I agree that the Chinese detectors are getting better in performance. I own a MD3018, which is a copy of the White's Classic ID circuit (as I recall) and performs very decently. BUT... build quality is still poor, and the durn thing is heavy and uncomfortable. Between it and a real Classic, I would pay a little extra and get the Real Thing.

If the Chinese continue to copy detector circuits and not design anything themselves (which will probably be the case), then the best strategy for detector companies is to put more of the design in protected micros and make it very difficult to copy, which is exactly what is happening. This will limit the Chinese to low-end detectors and older technology.

K-MD3023 is the same as MD-1023 and GC-1023. Made in China. See
      https://www.geotech1.com/thuntings/s...ad.php?t=14165
      for pictures of the pcb.

That is exactly my case in point Qiaozhi. It would be almost impossible to find persons that had access to all the different detectors I would to test. At least this this narrows the field and gives me at least some information on which are the ones to be looking for. I dont want to spend a $1000.00 on a machine and find out that there are ones out there that would have done the same thing for half the price. Comfort is one of the last things Im interested in, with things like swing e things and hip and chest mounts there is always a way out. Like I said before for some one like me who knows nothing abt electronics and the internal workings of these machines .Which detector works best in what situations you guys are the experts , Not the experts that print the hype for various companies. My hat is off to you for your opinions. thanks Bill Cohen

"Comfort is one of the last things Im interested in..."

Don't ignore ergonomics, it makes a difference. I have a Garrett GTI-2500 which, with a 12.5" coil, goes really deep. I can swing it for maybe 2 hours before my arm is seriously hurting. I can swing a Tesoro or a White's all day long. If you buy something that's painful to use, then you won't be detecting long.

NOW A COMPANY CALLED FAMOUS TRAILS IS BUYING CHINESE MADE DETECTORS AND RE-SELLING IN THE U.S AT A VERY GOOD PROFIT MARGIN , AND THE DETECTORS ARE COPIED FROM THE U.S. TO BEGIN WITH !!! I ALREADY COMPLAINED ABOUT THIS A WHILE BACK . Eugenehttps://www.geotech1.com/thuntings/s...ad.php?t=13036 also https://www.geotech1.com/thuntings/s...ad.php?t=11968

I agree with you Carl .Ill try anYthing to make the detector more comfortable. When I have exhausted all the options. Ill take the heavy detector if I thought I could get better results.

Well - this just confirms what I was saying. I have used a GTI2500 and didn't like it all. By the way, when I mentioned the cheap cr*p in eBay, I wasn't necessarily talking about Chinese detectors. Some of these are actually quite good, even if they are copies.

My main point is "try before you buy". If you ask the "what's the best detector?" question on any forum, you'll get a hundred different opinions. Alternatively, buy a secondhand detector on eBay. Then try it, and if you don't like it, sell it and buy a different one. If you don't like that one, then buy another, etc., etc. You might even make a profit in the process.

                      I have the GTI2500.
                      Same problem with you. Heavy....
If you connect the plates... more heavy
                      But very strong
Also i work with a XLT.
Not so strong.... but as you said you may work all the day.

I've just got Eagle Spectrum. Long time no see! Have to admit i am exhausted after 40 minutes of holding it and walking arround. Yet...sweet pains! Good old daddy Eagle!
Considering comfort...Troy Shadow and Tesoro are ultimate champions!
Conisdering overall performances White's and Minelab are ultimate champions.
Garret and Fisher are somewhere in a middle.
MD3018...no wonder you are bit disapointed Carl...me also. To inert of smaller targets..kind of deaf.
Nautilus...pitty, there are no those here, in East Europe...
Yet..my best experiences with non motion detectors were with few excellent Cscopes!
So ... not clear again!? How come?
Real prospector must have at least dozen various detectors to stay happy!

Absolute champion of "liars" - Garret Ace!
That seems a little harsh. I have an Ace 250 and it is a very capable machine, especially for the price. I agree that it's discrimination isn't 100% accurate, but I wouldn't qualify it as the worst. It's detection power is quite impressive too, especially on very small items.

I couldn't agree with you more. The Eagle Spectrum is an awesome machine. It is the machine I go to for dirt hunting every time. I really love it.

I think the Ace is better on wood chip playgrounds, though. With the 4.5" Sniper coil, you can get right up to the metal equipment. That Sniper coil is magic.

I'm curious about the Nautilus machines. What, technically, is it that makes them so favorable?

Sorry, sometimes i am to negative, more than it need. I pull back my words.
Might be Ace is not best choice for terrains i am visiting here, at my place.
                            Highly mineralized,trashy...simply - terriblle terrains.

Nautilus... i dont know? I do have full trust in some people claims here and on other forums, so do beleive it is excellent machine. Pitty, i havent chance to see that in action. Looking forward to.

That could definitely explain it. Since the Ace has a fixed ground balance, it does not perform so well in highly mineralized ground. It definitely doesn't perform well on wet sand at saltwater beaches either.
